[Colloque]EAESP Small Group Meeting : jugement social

L'Association Européenne de Psychologie Sociale Expérimentale (EAESP) organise du 7 au 9 juin 2007 à Namur (Belgique) un Small Group Meeting sur "Fundamental dimensions of social judgment: A view from different perspectives".

Meeting focus: Half a century of research in psychology reveals that the same two dimensions underlie most judgments of traits, people, groups, and cultures. Although the definitions vary, the first dimension makes reference to attributes such as competence, agency, and individualism, and the second to warmth, communion, and collectivism. It is interesting to note that these dimensions have not only attracted the attention of a number of social psychologists (Asch, 1956; Brown, 1965; Rosenber, Sedlak & Vivekananthan, 1968; Reeder & Brewer, 1979; for more recent examples, see Abele, 2003; Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; Judd, James-Hawkins, Yzerbyt, & Kashima, 2005; Phalet & Poppe, 1997; Wojciszke, 2005) but they have also been high on the research agendas of personality and cross-cultural psychologists. Beyond these perspectives, various strands of research both in social psychology (social comparison, stereotypes, self-concept, social neuropsychology, etc) and also in neighbouring fields such as personality psychology, organizational psychology, decision-making, anthropology, sociology and even linguistics are increasingly turning their attention to the antecedents, processes, and consequences associated with these dimensions. A small group meeting stimulating research, debate, and integration about this topic is thus both timely and needed.

This meeting should provide a venue for debate, integration, and collaboration. It would not only stimulate empirical work and ultimately publications on this topic but it should provide a networking opportunity for EAESP members as well scientists from all parts of the world working on and/or interested in this topic. We plan sessions on the self, person perception and social judgement, as well as group perception and stereotypes. We also would like to include presentations on applied topics like consequences of agency/competence/power or communion/warmth on various outcomes in the areas of organizational psychology or health psychology. Finally, we are interested in theoretical contributions dealing with this topic.

Location and arrangements: The meeting will take place at the Hotel ‘Le Chateau de Namur’ (http://www.chateaudenamur.com/). The hotel is on top of the main hill dominating Namur and the junction of the Meuse river and the Sambre river. Namur is a charming mid-sized French-speaking city. As the administrative capital of Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, Namur has many assets in terms of tourism and shopping and is very easy to reach by train or by car from Brussels and from other major European cities in the vicinity.

Applications To accommodate our expected 25 participants, we have already obtained support from EAESP and are working toward additional funding from the Belgian National Funds for Scientific Research (both FWO and FNRS). Nearly all meal and accommodation expenses will be covered. Depending on additional funding, support may be available for transportation costs. Those interested in participating should submit a one-page summary of the work that they would present at the meeting. In addition, please send a brief abstract (100 words or less) that could be included in the conference program, as well as a cover page indicating your name, affiliation, contact information, and membership status in EAESP.
